The aesthetic medical professionals at Kalos Medical Spa are committed to helping our patients achieve their aesthetic and wellness goals, and we recently added GLP-1 weight loss injections (semaglutide and tirzepatide) to our menu of services. If you’re considering weight loss medication, you likely have questions about what results you can expect and how they fit into your overall body transformation plan. Below, we answer some of the most common questions about GLP-1 weight loss injections to help you make an informed decision.

Can I lose 20 pounds in a month with semaglutide or tirzepatide?

Losing 20 pounds in a month is generally not realistic or healthy. A 20-pound loss is more realistic after 4+ months on weight loss medication. GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide and tirzepatide reduce appetite and improve metabolic function to promote gradual, sustainable weight loss. It takes a few weeks for the body to adjust to the medication and show visible weight loss, after which most patients lose 1-3 pounds per week.

Can GPL-1s help with body contouring?

GLP-1s reduce overall body fat, but do not sculpt or contour specific areas. It is common to still have localized fat deposits even after reaching your goal weight.

CoolSculpting® may be a good solution for targeting and reducing stubborn fat bulges at any point in your weight loss journey. We also offer Morpheus8, which combines microneedling with radiofrequency tissue tightening, to help tighten mild skin laxity that may occur in various areas post-weight loss and to help melt fat for noticeable contouring.

For more significant body sculpting, especially after major weight loss, procedures like liposuction or surgical lifting procedures may be a better option. Our team, which is led by Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Emily Kirby, can help you determine the best approach based on your goals.

What is “Ozempic face”?

“Ozempic face” refers to facial volume loss that some patients experience after rapid weight loss. When the face loses fat, it may result in a gaunt or aged appearance. This can occur no matter how the weight is lost.

If you notice facial changes with GLP-1 medications, treatments like dermal fillers or biostimulators (such as Sculptra®) can help restore lost volume. If needed, Dr. Kirby can meet with you to discuss facial fat injections

Can I use GLP-1s to reach my goal weight before plastic surgery?

Yes, GLP-1s have been invaluable in helping patients lose weight before plastic surgery. Typically, being at or near your goal weight can improve your overall results, especially for procedures like tummy tucks or body lifts. Studies have also shown that for safety reasons, it is best to have a body mass index lower than 30 prior to undergoing elective cosmetic surgery.

It is important to reach a stable weight safely before surgery to ensure optimal healing and long-lasting results. Highly restrictive diets may lead to deficiencies that make it difficult to heal after surgery. We recommend consulting with Dr. Kirby to create a plan that aligns with your surgical timeline.

Do I need to stop treatments like fillers and Botox while taking GLP-1s?

No, Botox® and dermal fillers are safe to receive while taking GLP-1 medications. Weight loss can impact how fillers settle in the face, so adjustments to your treatment plan may be necessary to ensure your injectable treatments continue to enhance your natural features. You may also continue your normal skincare routine and professional skin treatments at our Fort Worth medical spa while taking semaglutide or tirzepatide.

How overweight do I need to be to start taking semaglutide or tirzepatide?

We understand the complexities of body mass and weight loss, and we do not determine eligibility solely based on the number on the scale. Every patient is unique, so our team will assess your health history, weight loss goals, and overall suitability for these medications during your consultation. Generally speaking, GLP-1 medications are typically prescribed for individuals with a BMI of 30 or higher (or 27+ with weight-related conditions like hypertension or diabetes).

Can weight loss injections help with healthy weight loss?

Yes! Semaglutide and tirzepatide are intended to support healthy weight loss. Unlike crash diets or extreme calorie restriction, these medications work by regulating hunger hormones to reduce cravings and help you feel full longer on a healthy, nutrient-dense diet—making it easier to adopt long-term healthy habits. We recommend pairing injections with a balanced diet and regular physical activity to maximize and maintain your results after treatments have ended.

Are weight loss injections safe to use long-term?

Yes. Your treatment duration depends on factors such as your overall health, weight loss goals, and response to the medication. Some patients take GLP-1s for a shorter time to jumpstart their weight loss, while others may benefit from extending their treatments to help improve health conditions or for continued weight management support. If you’re considering long-term use, we will closely monitor your progress to ensure the treatment remains safe and effective.

What happens when you stop taking semaglutide or tirzepatide?

Patients who continue eating and exercising like they did while taking semaglutide or tirzepatide typically maintain their weight loss results. A significant advantage of GLP-1 medications is their ability to change your relationship with food. Because patients feel fuller for longer, impulse eating occurs less often and many become more aware of the right portion sizes for their body. This more mindful approach to eating is what will help you keep the weight off long after your treatments end.

Still, it is safe to restart GLP-1s if you need to later on.

Is it safe to get semaglutide or tirzepatide online?

Buying medications online can be risky. Many online suppliers sell counterfeit or improperly stored products that may be ineffective or harmful. Additionally, GLP-1s should be prescribed and overseen by a physician, whose oversight may be lax when buying medication online. The success of semaglutide and tirzepatide relies on a medical provider who understands your health condition and goals and creates a treatment plan that does not compromise your safety or results.

Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Emily Kirby oversees our weight loss medications so that you receive an FDA-approved product, the appropriate dosage, and personalized, ongoing care and support.
